Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Thursday that the country’s government is yet to decide on cancelling tennis superstar Novak Djokovic’s visa. Djokovic was included in the draw for the Australian Open on Thursday and Morrison declined to make further comments on the issue.
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke continues to hold the right to cancel Djokovic’s visa a second time after a court asked for it to be reinstated. Morrison said in a news conference that Hawke’s statement that he is pondering whether to tear up the visa “has not changed”.
“I will refer to Minister Hawke’s most recent statement in that the position hasn’t changed,” he said.
“These are personal ministerial powers able to be exercised by Minister Hawke and I don’t propose to make any further comment at this time.”
While an Australian court on Monday allowed him to stay in the country, Djokovic’s cause was not helped when he admitted to meeting people after testing positive for Covid-19 in December and blaming human error for mistakes made in his Australian entry documents in a lengthy statement.
Djokovic, a vaccine sceptic, fuelled widespread anger in Australia last week when he announced he was heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open with a medical exemption to requirements for visitors to be inoculated against COVID-19.
When Djokovic arrived, Australian Border Force officials decided his exemption was invalid and he was held alongside asylum-seekers at an immigration detention hotel for several days.
