Govt says traceability of messages for social media firms won’t weaken encryption
The explanation was part of a document released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology answering frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to the Information Technology Rules that came into effect on May 26. The government said the FAQs were created in consultation with the industry and other stakeholders.
Social media intermediaries and cyber and privacy advocates have raised questions that the traceability of the first originator infringes on user privacy and companies have to invest significantly in rejigging their technical architecture to enable such provision.
“The Internet for all of the good things that it represents – the ability to deliver good governance, the ability of the last man or woman in our democracy to reach out to the government, the opportunity for entrepreneurs to become unicorns – but it also represents significant growth in things that we refer to as user harm,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Electronics and Information Technology.
“So policymaking has to address, grow the good and address the bad in a manner that is very transparent and very effective,” he added at an event announcing the launch of the FAQs which the government said was prepared after consulting with all stakeholders in the industry, government and bodies representing players in this space.
MeitY, however, said that it will release a separate standard operating procedure (SOP), something that the industry has been awaiting for, to guide companies on how to deal with content takedown requests from government agencies, both at the State and Centre level.
