Mother-son duo, a set of father-in-law and daughter-in-law, a husband-wife and two father-son duos are currently represent different constituencies in the temple of world’ largest democracy.
We have listed few MPs who are not only torchbearers of their respective political parties. They hold the flag of ‘Family in Indian Parliament’.
Mother Son duo Sonia and Rahul Gandhi
The mother-son duo of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are carrying the legacy of the Gandhi family in the Parliament. Despite of Congress’ poor result in 2014, Sonia won her family bastion Rae Bareli by a huge margin of over 3.5 lakh votes votes.
Rahul Gandhi too emerged victorious from another family fiefdom Amethi in Uttar Pradesh by a handsome margin of around 1.07 lakh votes, defeating Smriti Irani.
Maneka Gandhi and Varun Gandhi
Like Sonia and Rahul, another part of the Gandhi family, mother-son duo Maneka and Varun too are holding their strong position in politics.
Widow of former Indian PM Indira Gandhi’s younger son Sanjay Gandhi, Maneka is a BJP MP from Pillibhit constituency. Her son Varun Gandhi is also a BJP MP from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, Maneka is the Union Minister of Women and Child Development.
Mulayam Singh Yadav and Dimple Yadav
Another example of family in Parliament is former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his daughter in-law Dimple Yadav. Mulayam represents Azamgarh in the Lok Sabha. He defeated BJP’s Ramakant Yadav by over 60, 000 votes. His daughter-in-law Dimple won Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in 2014. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephews- Akshya Pratap Singh, Dharmendra Yadav and grand nephew Tej Pratap Singh- represent Firozabad, Badayun and Mainpuri respectively in the Lok Sabha, while his brother Ramgopal Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP.
Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Ranjeet Ranjan
Often termed as the ‘only couple’ in the Parliament, Rajesh Rajnan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, and his wife Ranjeet Ranjan is a rare example in the Lower House. Pappu Yadav defeated veteran politician Sharad Yadav from Madhepura in Bihar in 2014 general elections on the RJD ticket. His wife Ranjeet Ranjan won Supaul Lok Sabha seat on the Congress ticket.
Ramgopal Yadav and Akshya Yadav
Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav, brother of Mulayam Singh Yadav, is a Rajya Sabha MP, while his son Akshay won from Firozabad Lok Sabha constituency in 2014.
Ramvilas Paswan, Chirag Paswan and Ramchandra Paswan
Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan is an MP from Hajipur constituency, while his brother Ramchandra represents Samastipur in the Lok Sabha. Ram Vilas Paswan’s son Chirag Paswan also won from Jamui Lok Sabha seat.
