Common syllabus will reduce academic burden for Boards, JEE Advanced, Main – Rashtra News : Education News

The recent revision of the JEE Advanced 2023 syllabus was long overdue. “The entire process had begun following the Joint Admission Board (JAB) 2020 committee meeting when JEE Main NTA officials told us that they were in the process of revising the JEE Main syllabus. What followed was the setting up of the syllabus revision committee by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) where initially faculty members from the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the seven IITs – Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee — were entrusted with the responsibility of formulating the new syllabus. Each faculty member from the older IITs had to discuss the formulation of the new syllabus with their own departments and faculty members of the non-zonal IITs so that all the 23 IITs had a say in the final syllabus revision,” says a senior IIT-Delhi faculty associated with the JEE Advanced office on condition of anonymity.

“In the IITs, the Engineering syllabus is reviewed every years 5 years, and every 10 years, there is an overhaul of the existing curriculum. Consequently, the JEE Advanced syllabus had to be in sync with future demands,” he adds.

Two years’ time

“The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revised the syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Classes XI-XII starting 2019-2020 examinations. Therefore, a committee was constituted in 2019-20 to review the JEE Advanced syllabus and suggest changes, if any,” says RD Garg, chairman JEE (Advanced) 2021 IIT Roorkee, adding that the revised syllabus will be effective only from 2023 and will give two years’ margin to first-time aspirants who are appearing that year.

Level playing field

Highlighting the fact that the new syllabus matches with the NCERT curriculum, Saurabh Kumar, director Academics, Vidyamandir Classes, explains that a common syllabus for the Boards, JEE Main and JEE Advanced will reduce students’ academic burden. “Even though JEE Main covers all the topics included in the school curriculum, a few topics and chapters were not included in the JEE Advanced syllabus. In the revised syllabus, that is set to change.”

“In Physics, no topics have been removed but several concepts have been added, which seems to be easier than the previous topics and are high-scoring. In Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry has been removed and certain amendments have been made to the Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry sections. In Mathematics, harmonic progression and solution of triangles have been removed, and topics like Statistics, fundamentals of Algebra and Quadratic Equations have been added,” Kumar says.

Aligned with NEP 2020


With the syllabus being common for all three exams, the competition will be high as compared to previous years. “The revision will also boost foreign students’ chances to the country’s premiere institutes. Being in accordance with the NEP 2020 that emphasises on the Internationalisation of education., they will have a reduced difficulty level since the questions will be from the school level,” Kumar explains.

The JEE Advanced 2023 syllabus has been revised with the need to bring CBSE, JEE and different state boards on the same page, says Ajay Kumar Sharma, national academic director (Engineering), Aakash Educational Services Ltd. Students, he adds, can steer clear of the confusion that arises due to a particular topic being exclusively in JEE Main or JEE Advanced syllabus. “Now almost all topics are relevant for both the Engineering entrance exams.”

Notable additions


“In Physics, a full chapter on Electromagnetic Waves has been added besides topics like Surface tension. In Chemistry, notable additions are the chapters like Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Hydrogen, f-block elements and Crystal Field Theory (CFT) in coordination compounds. Also, theoretical chapters like Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry in Everyday Life and some sections in Bio-molecules are now a part of the new syllabus. In Mathematics, Set Theory and Statistics are the significant additions. Some topics like Elementary Row Operations are added to the new syllabus. As the additional chapters have always been a part of JEE Main, it is only imperative that students go one notch above those levels to reach the desired levels of JEE Advanced. Subject wise, students may get some easy questions from the newly added chapters in Chemistry, but in Physics and Mathematics, the challenge remains the same,” Sharma says.
