While Suryakumar Yadav is expected to head to South Africa in a few days’ time for the 3-match ODI series, starting January 19, Rohit was ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury issue. Rohit was named as India’s ODI captain before the South Africa tour but he will miss the white-ball leg of it as the selectors are hoping he completely recovers from the issue.
Rohit Sharma had been in rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He was also appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team but the Mumbai Indians captain missed the 3-match Test series as well.
KL Rahul will lead India in the absence of Rohit in the ODI series. Notably, Rahul is leading India in the 2nd Test in Johannesburg after Virat Kohli was ruled out with a back spasm.
Meanwhile, chief selector Chetan Sharma confirmed that the selection committee did not want to risk playing Rohit in South Africa and rather allowing him time to completely recover from the persistent injury issues.
“This is the only reason we decided that he (Rohit) goes and do his rehab, work on his fitness, work on his muscles
“There is so much cricket (happening). No player wishes for an injury, everybody wants to play, nobody gets injured intentionally.
“And this was the reason to stop Rohit from these three matches, that he is 100 per cent fit, there is the World Cup in front of you, there are important series in front of you, that is the reason,” Sharma said on December 31.
