Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the second match of the Indian Premier League 2022 between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals from the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
MI 104/2 in 13 overs: Nagarkoti returns after a 16-run first over and starts with a yorker outside off that Tilak fails to dig out. Crisp cut off the backfoot but Tilak finds the fielder at point. FOUR! First boundary for the debutant. Dug in short and Tilak pulls it over mid wicket with zeal. FOUR! Nagarkoti over-compensates by revving it in the slot and Tilak launches it over mid on for a one-bounce boundary. Single at deep mid wicket and hundred up for Mumbai in 12.5 overs. FOUR!
MI 91/2 in 12 overs: Lalit Yadav into the attack. Three singles to start the over. Tilak pulls again to fine leg for a single. A couple for him at long on off a low full-toss. Six runs from it.
MI 85/2 in 11 overs: Kuldeep continues. Anmolpreet sweeps to fine leg for one. Ishan steps out but manages just a single at deep mid wicket. Anmolpreet collects a couple after clipping it to deep mid wicket. OUT! Anmolpreet was looking to cut loose and went inside out over covers to find the man at long off. Anmolpreet Singh c Lalit Yadav b Kuldeep Yadav 8(9b 0x4 0x6). Tilak Varma in at four in his debut IPL game. He pulls his first ball fiercely to fine leg for one. One more to end the over.
MI 79/1 in 10 overs: Two singles to start Axar’s third over. FOUR! Short and Ishan cuts it away past point for a boundary. Ten runs from the over. Ishan has been handed over the baton of adding impetus to the innings and he is in fine touch today. Mumbai Indians stuttered a bit after an explosive PowerPlay.
MI 69/1 in 9 overs: Kuldeep darts it straight through Rohit and the keeper and two byes as Rohit misses the reverse-sweep. OUT! Length on middle, rushed onto Rohit a bit and he pulled it straight to the man at deep mid wicket. Rohit Sharma c Rovman Powell b Kuldeep Yadav 41(32b 4×4 2×6). Anmolpreet Singh is in at number three. Drives the first one straight to cover. Leading edge and Kuldeep leaps valiantly to his left and it is just out of his reach; Anmolpreet gets off the mark with one. Single to Ishan. Beaten! Kuldeep bamboozles Anmolpreet by spinning it away outside off.
MI 65/0 in 8 overs: Axar from the other end. Rohit punches through mid wicket off the backfoot for a single. Ishan wants a second but Rohit sends him away after he is halfway down the track. Rohit and Ishan nudge Axar around for three singles. FOUR! Length from Axar and Rohit rocks back and cuts behind point for a boundary. Miscued sweep and Rohit fetches just one at short fine leg.
MI 56/0 in 7 overs: Kuldeep Yadav with the ball after the PowerPlay. Single to long off for Rohit to start with. Ishan returns strike with one more. Rohit slaps a fuller one down the ground for a single. Just three runs from the over.
MI 53/0 in 6 overs: Khaleel returns. Length to Rohit, angling away outside off with extra bounce, and Rohit is beaten. Beaten again outside off with some away movement going across. Angled in this time from tight off stump line and Rohit almost chopped on trying to steer it to third man. Dropped! Rohit shuffles across to off stump and goes for the ramp and Thakur drops a sitter at short fine leg. FOUR! Rohit shows his class! Steps down the track and smashes it over covers for a boundary. Single to end the over.
MI 48/0 in 5 overs: FOUR! Rohit greets Nagarkoti into the attack with a gentle dab to the third man boundary. Dug in next ball and Rohit pulls it straight to Thakur at mid wicket. SIX! A gift to the Hitman – short and down leg side and Rohit pulls it over fine leg. This one is too wide outside off. Length on off and Rohit defends it back to the bowler. Single to third man for Rohit with a dab with open face. FOUR! Short and wide again and Ishan dispatches it with an agricultural slash to the deep point fence.
MI 32/0 in 4 overs: Axar into the attack in the fourth over. Round the wicket to Rohit. Rohit fetches one at mid wicket. Ishan sweeps to deep mid wicket for two more. FOUR! A leading edge of sorts off Ishan’s blade and it goes over Axar and under a diving mid off and purrs to the straight boundary.
MI 25/0 in 3 overs: Thakur continues. Fuller length again on the stumps and Rohit clips it to mid on for one. Over the wicket to Ishan. Short of a length on middle and leg and Ishan hops to defend. Two singles follow as Thakur doesn’t give them the length to free their arms. Ishan bunts a shorter one back to Thakur. SIX! All the hard work undone by that one inventive shot by Ishan. He almost flaps at the short ball, rather unceremoniously, and it goes the distance over third man.
MI 16/0 in 2 overs: Khaleel Ahmed from the other end. Short of length and Ishan Kishan defends it and steals a single. Short again, to Rohit, and the lack of pace doesn’t allow Rohit to go through with his signature pull. Beaten! Khaleel angles it away from a length and beats Rohit’s outside edge. Serenely driven by Rohit but just a single. FOUR! Full and outside off and Ishan kneels and drives with open face through covers for his first boundary.
MI 10/0 in 1 over: Pitched up on off to Rohit first ball and he steers it to mid off for a dot. Rohit flicks the next one on leg and Nagarkotti puts in a good dive at mid wicket for no runs. Second slip has been removed. FOUR! Angling down leg side and Rohit flicks it to fine leg for a boundary. Width and room outside off on offer and Rohit cuts stylishly but straight to point. SIX! Too full and Rohit’s lofted drive over long off takes it over the ropes.
15-27 IST: The umpires are walking out to the middle, followed by the players. Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma will open the batting for Mumbai Indians. Shardul Thakur with the ball. Two slips in place.

PREVIEW
Mumbai Indians will begin its Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign in its home city after almost three years, but the team management believes that there is no added advantage.
While its opening fixture against Delhi Capitals on Sunday afternoon will be at the Brabourne Stadium – which hasn’t hosted an IPL fixture since 2015 – Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma believes that with a ‘relatively new team’ – in which most cricketers have no experience of playing in Mumbai – there would be ‘no advantage’.

With the temperature expected to soar to about 34 degrees, it will be a challenge for both Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to get accustomed to the conditions and all eyes will be on Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard and Jasprit Bumrah – Mumbai’s ‘core team’, which has enough experience of playing in the hot and humid conditions of the city.
While the team management has decided to open the innings with Rohit and Ishan, Mumbai will be missing out on the services of Suryakumar Yadav for the first game. After undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy, Suryakumar entered the Mumbai team bubble on Saturday evening and would only be available for selection after undergoing the mandatory quarantine.
Sunday’s fixture will also be a test of character for the two captains – Rohit and Rishabh Pant. Having led Delhi last season, Pant now has enough experience and it would be interesting to see how the young wicketkeeper-batter handles his team this time around.
With David Warner yet to join the squad due to his international commitments, captain Pant is likely to open the innings for Delhi along with Prithvi Shaw, and coming into the tournament in red-hot form, Delhi’s fortunes will depend on how captain Pant fires with the willow. The team has enough depth in the batting department, with West Indies’ hard-hitting batter Rovman Powell, Sarfaraz Khan and Yash Dhull around.

As far as the bowling department is concerned, Mumbai will heavily rely on the seasoned Bumrah and Jaydev Undakat – one of the consistent performers in the domestic circuit – while Tymal Mills’ experience could come in handy.
Delhi, however, suffered a blow as Anrich Nortje will miss out on the initial few games due to a hip injury. So, the onus will be on the likes of Shardul Thakur and Chetan Sakariya. The team also has a spinner all-rounder in Axar Patel, who would be raring to go.
Despite claiming five titles, Mumbai Indians failed to make it to the play-offs in the last edition of the tournament, while a title has eluded Delhi so far. So, as yet another edition beckons, both teams will be hoping to start with a bang.
