HIGHLIGHTS
- Virat Kohli scored 48 runs off 36 balls against MI
- Dewald Brevis dismissed Kohli in his first ball in the IPL
- On Saturday, RCB defeated MI by seven wickets
18-year-old South Africa all-rounder Dewald Brevis has come up the ranks in his career at the rate of knots. After plundering runs in the U19 World Cup in the West Indies, the Young Turk has made his way into the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) after the Mumbai Indians (MI) picked him up in the mega auction back in February.
He started his IPL sojourn after scoring 29 runs against Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 6. But the Johannesburg-born cricketer hogged the limelight after he dismissed former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli on the very first ball he bowled in the IPL.
Brevis churned out a googly and struck Kohli on the pads, after which the on-field umpire gave the batter out. The 33-year-old Kohli used the DRS, but to no avail. The Delhi-born Kohli was a tad agitated as he walked back to the dressing room in anger.
‘Good? Enjoying it?’
But after the end of the match at the MCA Stadium in Pune, Kohli walked up to Brevis and congratulated him. “Young man. Good one, eh! Good first meeting, get me on the first ball,” Kohli said while speaking to Brevis. “How’s it? Good? Enjoying it?” Kohli added. “Yeah, good experience,” Brevis replied.
Kohli was on the verge of scoring his maiden fifty in IPL 2022 before Brevis got rid of him. Kohli scored 48 runs off 36 balls with five fours and took RCB within touching distance of a victory. Glenn Maxwell smashed Brevis for a four through the covers and helped the Challengers secure a seven-wicket win. Brevis didn’t have a great day with the bat after Wanindu Hasaranga dismissed him for eight.
