HIGHLIGHTS
- Sakariya finished with figures of 3-0-17-1
- On Thursday, DC defeated KKR by 4 wickets
- Sakariya dedicated his celebration to his father
Delhi Capitals’ (DC) fast bowler Chetan Sakariya pulled off a unique celebration after dismissing Aaron Finch in Thursday’s match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Finch tried to play a cross-batted shot on the on-side only to see his stumps shattered. Thereafter, he pulled off a celebration, similar to Dragon Ball Z cartoon character Goku.
The 24-year-old first crossed his arms in front and then put two of his fingers on his forehead. After DC’s four-wicket victory over the Men in Gold and Purple, Sakariya put forth the reason behind his celebration. The Young Turk made the revelations to teammate Kuldeep Yadav, who became the Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul.
‘Emotional celebration’
“It was an emotional celebration and it was for my father. He always wished for me to dismiss an international batter bowled,” Sakariya said to Kuldeep in a video uploaded on IPL’s official Instagram page.
Back in May 2021, Sakariya’s father, Mr. Kanjibhai Sakariya, passed away at the age of 42 after testing positive for COVID-19. Sakariya played for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in his debut IPL season after being bought at a price of INR 1.2 crore. After the previous edition of the T20 league was halted due to coronavirus-related issues, Sakariya transferred a part of his IPL income for his father’s treatment.
After being released by the Royals, Sakariya went to the Capitals at a higher price of INR 4.20 crores. RR did try to get back the left-armer, but lost to DC in an intense bidding war, which also involved the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
On Thursday, the Bhavnagar-born Sakariya played his first match in IPL 2022 and finished with impressive bowling figures of 3-0-17-1. Back in July, Sakariya also went on to play two T20Is and one ODI against Sri Lanka.
