India’s Ravindra Jadeja’s performances with the ball in Australia is serving as pointers for England’s Jack Leach in his preparations for the Ashes in addition to watching clippings of ace off-spinner Nathan Lyon. The first Ashes Test starts on December 8 in Brisbane and Leach indicated that he fancies a place back in the team after the return of ace all-rounder Ben Stokes
“I don’t think (Jadeja) did too much different to what he does in India,” said Leach, who has played 16 Tests, taking 62 wickets, but none in Australia.
“That’s another nice thing to see. He’s taken what he does, is doing pretty similar things and having success.”
Leach said that Lyon, who is one wicket away from becoming the third Australian after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to reach 400 Test wickets, has been “very impressive” over the years bowling in Australia.
“Just how strong his stock ball is and on wickets that don’t necessarily offer a lot spin wise he’s found ways to extract extra bounce, dip, and all the other things,” said Leach.
“They’re the kind of things that I’ve been trying to add in but still sticking to my strengths as well.” Star all-rounder Ben Stokes has declared himself ‘fit and hungry’ for the marquee assignment after a long break from the game, and Leach believed it should help the team perform better.
Leach said that he was told that the absence of Stokes was the reason for his scant participation in Test matches during the English summer. Leach famously held up one end Stokes snatched victory from Australia in the third Test of the 2019 series at Headingley.
The 30-year-old scored one run in 17 balls in a manic 76-run last wicket stand with Stokes that came in just 62 balls. Stokes himself scored 74 off just 45 balls in the partnership.
“From the (English) summer, the feedback was that Stokesy not being in the side, not having that all-round option in the top order, kind of made things difficult for me to get in the side,” he said.
“It’s great to have him back around and he’s been brilliant. He’s such a team man and the group is only better for having him in it.”
