Former T20 World Cup winning captain of West Indies Daren Sammy has a stern message to his former teammates on Friday ahead of their must-win World T20 match against Bangladesh at Sharjah in 2021.
West Indies, champions in 2012 and 2016, have struggled in their first two games this edition, losing by six wickets to England in the opener and by eight wickets to South Africa in the second.
However, Sammy believes that if the West Indies can believe in themselves and play as a team in their next three games against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Australia they can still turn things around.
Sammy also reminded them how amazing the West Indies cricket squad is in a video published by the T20 World Cup’s official Twitter handle, while suggesting one alteration in the playing XI.
“We are all disappointed as the World Cup has not started the way we wanted it to. It doesn’t mean we are out. What we can control now is the way we go out and play. And as a captain I know I have to make some changes, Roston Chase would definitely come in. But I would remind them how great we are and how great we have been. And I would want them to look at the dressing room, Chris Gayle on his last way out and what he has done for the team. But it will take a total team effort. It’s all in the talking, but it’s the execution that matters. So we can still do it,” he said.
West Indies are currently at the bottom of Group 1 points table. West Indies can finish with six points if they win their next three games, and by a larger margin given their dismal NRR of -2.55, but they will still need South Africa and Sri Lanka to lose two of their remaining three games.
