India’s limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma congratulated former skipper Rahul Dravid for returning to the team as head coach of the side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced that Dravid will replace Ravi Shastri after the tournament and his first assignment will be to coach India in their upcoming home series against New Zealand.
“Is it official? We were playing the game, I had no idea,” said Rohit after India’s 66-run win over Afghanistan on Wednesday. India recorded their first win of the tournament on Wednesday with Rohit starring with a 47-ball 74.
“Congratulations to him for coming back but in a different capacity to the Indian team. We look forward to working with him. He is a stalwart of Indian cricket. And it will be nice working with him in the future,” said Rohit.
Earlier, Dravid said that he was looking forward to join the team as its new head coach. Under Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward. Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA, Under-19 and India ‘A’ setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day,” said Dravid in his statement.
“There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential,” Dravid said.
