Pakistan on Monday made history as they crushed West Indies by 63 runs in the first T20 international in Karachi to become the first team to register 18 victories in the format in a calendar year.
Chasing a mammoth 201 for victory, Pakistan bowled out the two-time former world champions for 137 in 19 overs to better their own record of 17 wins in a calendar year, which they had achieved in 2018.
West Indies were never really in the chase from the onset as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals thanks to Mohammad Wasim’s exploits with the ball.

Wasim bagged a career-best 4 wickets for 40 runs while Shadab Khan grabbed 3 for 17 to round off a commanding performance with the ball. Shaheen Afridi (1/35), Mohammad Nawaz (1/24) and Haris Rauf (1/21) were also among the wickets for the home team.
The match was set up in the first innings by opener Mohammad Rizwan and middle-order batsman Haider Ali, both of whom scored half-centuries in their 105-run partnership for the third wicket.
Rizwan top-scored with 78 runs from 52 balls but Haider was adjudged Player of the Match for his 39-ball 68, that included six boundaries and four sixes.
“I rate my innings 10 out of 10. Rizi bhai supported me really well and asked me to build my innings. I got a lot of confidence from the way Rizi bhai was playing,” Haider said.
Rizwan increased his tally this year to 1,201 runs in 27 T20s with another masterful knock that stood out in Pakistan’s imposing 200-6 after being sent in to bat. Haider on the other hand, opened up in the latter half of his knock to post his career-best score.
“Rizwan and Haider Ali played handy knocks and the way (Mohammad) Nawaz finished was outstanding,” Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said.
Babar added that the way the West Indies batsmen struggled against the spin of Shadab and Nawaz was encouragement to pick an extra spinner for the remaining two T20Is, that will be played at the same venue on December 14 and 16.
“Our spinners bowled well and put them under pressure. We will sit and discuss what combination to play for the next game,” Babar concluded.
