The BCCI, on September 8, pulled off the biggest surprise of the season by convincing a reticent Mahendra Singh Dhoni to become the national team’s mentor for the T20 World Cup to be held in Oman and Dubai in October-November.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag feels that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s comeback into the mainstream of Indian cricket is the best thing that could have happened.
Speaking to PTI, Sehwag said: “I am very happy that MS accepted the offer to be the Team Mentor for the T20 World Cup. I know many people want MS should again comeback into the mainstream of Indian cricket and being roped in as the mentor is the best thing that could have happened.”
India will open their campaign against Pakistan on October 24.
For Sehwag, there can’t be a better ‘mentor’ than Dhoni when it comes to young players.
“There are always players in any international side who are shy and do hesitate to go up to their skipper and strike up a cricketing conversation. MS has always been that kind of a person who is easily approachable and also a perfect trouble shooter for youngsters,” said Sehwag.
Being the only Indian captain to win all three ICC white ball trophies, the 40-year-old astute leader knows how to pull off big games and with only six months left in head coach Ravi Shastri’s tenure, it is understood that Dhoni’s suggestions will have a great bearing on how the head coach and captain select their playing XI in the UAE.
“As a keeper, MS was exceptional with his understanding of field placements and this is something that will help the bowling unit in this World Cup,” said Sehwag.
