Former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth will take on Singapore’s up and coming shutter Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles final of BWF World Championships 2021 at the Carolina Marin Stadium on Sunday, December 19. Srikanth has an opportunity to become the first man from India to win a gold medal at the world meet but it’s not going to be an easy task against the Singaporean who is playing some inspired badminton.

Kidambi Srikanth’s only meeting against Loh Kean Yew came at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the Indian shutter was able to clinch a victory in straight games. Srikanth will be hoping to make it 2-0 and he has shown the fire to go the distance in the world championships in Huelva.

Srikanth has not won a title on the tour since the French Open in October 2017 but the 28-year-old has shown signs of return to form. The 28-year-old, who had suffered a slump in form over the last 3 years, reached the semi-final of Indonesia Masters and the Hylo Open in the lead up to the world meet in Spain.

Srikanth came up with a lion-hearted effort to come back from a game down and beat his younger compatriot Lakshya Sen, who won a bronze medal after the semi-final finish, on Saturday. There were nerves in the opening game but Srikanth regained his composure and produced a masterclass to oust Lakshya and book a place in the final.

On the other hand, Loh has been in dream from ever since his return to the circuit after training with World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in Dubai. The youngster from Singapore outclassed Anders Antonsen in straight games in the semi-final. He had beaten Axelsen in the opening round, avenging his defeat from the Indonesia Open earlier this month wherein he lost the final to the reigning Olympic champion. Loh also defeated Kento Momota in Bali.

The men’s singles final between Kidambi Srikanth and Loh Kean Yew will be held at the Carolina Marin Stadium in Huelva on December 19. The final will not start before 5-15 pm IST.
