India’s decorated badminton star PV Sindhu said the Padma Bhushan Award will encourage her to achieve more success at the highest level and bring laurels for the country. Earlier this year, Sindhu scripted history by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

India’s decorated badminton player PV SIndhu on Monday was awarded with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Padma Awards ceremony as 119 awards were presented to winners.
PV SIndhu has been one of India’s finest athletes in the modern era. The 26-year-old won a silver medal in women’s singles badminton at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and followed it up with a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, thereby becoming the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. She also won the badminton world championships title in 2019.
Sindhu attended the Padma Awards ceremony on Monday and said he is honoured to have been conferred with the prestigious award for distinguished service of a high order to the country.
“It is a proud moment. I am thankful to the Government of India. These awards give us a lot of encouragement, support and motivation. I have some upcoming tournaments, I will give my best in them,” Sindhu was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Boxing great Mary Kom was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan Award, India’s second-highest civilian honour. A total of 11 sports persons were nominated for the Padma Awards in 2020.

Meanwhile, India’s hockey captain Rani Rampal received the Padma Shri award from President Kovind along with India women’s football star Oinam Bembem Devi.
World Cup-winning former India cricketer Zaheer Khan, hockey star MP Ganesh, shooter Jitu Rai, archer Tarundeep Rai were among the others who were nominated for Padma Shri in 2020.
