Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced Barbadian all-rounder Dominic Drakes as replacement for the injured Sam Curran for the rest of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Drakes, who yet to play for the West Indies, was the hero for St. Kitts and Nevis as they won the 2021 Carribean Premier League (CPL), picking 16 wickets in the tournament from 11 matches.
His most important contribution, however, came in the final, when he smashed an unbeaten 48 off 24 balls to lead St Kitts to the title. At CSK, Drakes will be rejoining his St Kitts captain Dwayne Bravo.
The 23-year-old was a net bowler for five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the UAE leg of this year’s IPL.

Curran, meanwhile, played only two matches for Super Kings in the UAE leg. He had a poor season with the ball, leaking 56 runs and 55 runs in the matches against Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals respectively in addition to remaining wicketless. Overall this season, he picked nine wickets in nine games and scored 56 runs in four innings.
He was dealing with back pain throughout the season and was diagnosed with a lower back injury, which also ruled him out for England in the T20 World Cup that will be played in the UAE this month shortly after the IPL. He will be replaced by his brother Tom Curran in the England squad.
