India captain Virat Kohli was not able to believe his own luck as he won a toss on return to the senior national side following the break. As Kohli and Tom Latham were at the toss, the New Zealand stand-in captain called it wrong, forcing a wry smile on Virat Kohli’s face.
Virat Kohli had no hesitation to opt to bat against New Zealand in the 2nd Test in Mumbai despite overnight rain in the city. The pitch was covered and there was a bit of moisture but with the sun beating down after wet outfield washed out the first session, Kohli made the call to bat.
Former India batter Wasim Jaffer took to social media to share a hilarious meme as Kohli walked back to the dressing room after winning a rare toss.

Notably, Kohli did not have luck going his way in his last tournament as T20I captain – the T20 World Cup. India lost tosses in their first 2 matches and lost both of them to Pakistan and New Zealand — a setback from which the former champions weren’t able to recover. Kohli won 2 tosses out of a possible 5 at the World Cup as they were knocked out in the Super 12 stages.
Earlier this year in England, Kohli managed to win only 1 out of 4 tosses in the Test series but India managed to get a 2-1 lead before the 5th Test was postponed due to Covid-19 concerns.
Kohli doesn’t have a good record when it comes to tosses in Test matches. Out of 66 matches as India’s Test captain, he has won the toss only on 29 occasions.
All eyes were on Kohli as he walked out for the toss in Mumbai on Friday as Rohit Sharma had won all 3 tosses in the T20I series against New Zealand and Ajinkya Rahane won the toss in Kanpur Test. Rahane missed out of the Mumbai Test due to a niggle as Kohli replaced him while Mohammed Siraj and Jayant Yadav replaced injured Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.
