Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel lauded the current Indian team after their historic win in the Centurion Test, saying that the Virat Kohli-led side is “by far the best team in the world”.
India wrapped up a memorable 2021 in style by bringing down South Africa’s citadel, the Supersport Park, as they handed the Proteas a 113-run loss in the opening Test.
“Well Done. They (Team India) are by far the best team in the world today. In a short time now, you deserve it, they’ve worked long and hard to support their team that can go and compete away from home,” Morkel said during the post-match show on Star Sports.
India’s fiery pace unit, including the world-class Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, picked up 18 wickets to make the country the first Asian team to win a Test match at the SuperSport Park.
“The clear game plan that the bowlers can take 20 wickets; so enjoy this moment. I think it’s a special feat to be a part of. For me, India are definitely leading the way,” he added.
India achieved their victory despite the entire second day of the Test being washed out due to rain and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second Test will be played in Johannesburg from Jan. 3-7, with the third set for Cape Town from Jan. 11-15. India are seeking a first-ever Test series win in South Africa.
