- England’s openers ended Day 4 unbeaten on a 77-run stand
England all-rounder Moeen Ali said that fellow spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja of India would be the biggest threat for the hosts at the Oval on Day 5 of the fourth Test. England fought back on Day 4 after a brutal Indian second innings with their openers remaining unbeaten on a stand of 77 after facing 32 overs.
It meant that England will start Day 5 needing 291 runs to win the match and take a lead in the series. “Jasprit Bumrah is one of those bowlers that can make anything happen, but Jadeja is the biggest threat on that wicket. It’s such a flat wicket but we’re still going to have to play well. India always fight back strongly and that’s something we’re going to have to be wary about,” Ali told Sky Sports.
“I thought the boys batted excellently. We knew if we get through the first 10 to 15 overs, the two guys who are in are very disciplined. They’ve done it before in the series when they put on an amazing partnership, so hopefully, they can do it again tomorrow,” he added.
England would have to pull off their highest successful run chase to win the Test. India set them a target of 368 after the visitors made 466 in their second innings. Notably, England had successfully chased down the target at home the last time they needed to surpass their record for highest successful run chases in Test cricket when they chased down 362 against Australia at Headingley two years ago. However, it was all-rounder Ben Stokes who almost single-handedly took them to victory after they were down to their last wicket. Stokes is not part of the England squad for this series.
