This week, it emerged that Samsung was throttling the performance of several apps on its smartphones. But thankfully, the South Korean phone maker has been quick to respond and has released a statement over the issue.
Reportedly, it was due to the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) on Galaxy devices which was limiting the performance of the thousands of apps. And remarkably, these apps go beyond games. Android authority noted that apps like Microsoft’s Office, Netflix, Google Keep, TikTok were on the list. Even Samsung’s own Samsung Pay, Samsung Cloud, Samsung Pass were among those whose performance took a halt by the company itself.
Since the phone maker was ‘caught out’, it faced several complaints from users, especially in the Korean online community. One Korean YouTuber even posted screenshots illustrating the diverging performance of apps on Samsung devices.
Samsung flagships delisted from Geekbench
As the issue cam on the surface, popular cross-platform benchmark platform Geekbench has pulled premium Samsung phones from its list over the issue. This includes 4 Galaxy S-series high-end devices – the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S21, and the latest Galaxy S22 lineups. The platform has done so referring citing ‘benchmark manipulation’ on Samsung’s part.
Geekbench’s official statement read, “Earlier this week, we were made aware of Samsung’s Game Optimizing Service (GOS) and how it throttles the performance of games and applications. GOS decides to throttle (or not to throttle) applications using application identifiers and not application behavior. We view this as a form of benchmark manipulation as major benchmark applications, including Geekbench, are not throttled by this service.“
What it means is the delisted phones won’t make a return to Geekbench again. And that applies even when Samsung addresses the issue. And speaking of Samsung’s response, the company has released an official statement regarding the app’s performance throttling issue.

Samsung releases a statement
After users discovered that Samsung was throttling apps performance on some of its devices, Samsung quickly made a responded. The company said that its GOS could have limited the apps’ efficiency. But it also reasons that the service was helpful to reduce battery consumption and optimize the holistic performance of devices.
But in light of users’ complaints, it will roll out a software patch to sort out the issue.
“We value the feedback we receive about our products and after careful consideration, we plan to roll out a software update soon so users can control the performance while running game apps,” Samsung said.

The idea with GOS was to enhance gaming performance on smartphones by limiting other apps’ performance. However, it was counterproductive for the devices’ performance. As Samsung acknowledges it and plans to roll out a software update, its fans should find relief about it.
