Samsung is reportedly developing a new display with under-panel camera technology for the 2023 Apple iPhone 15 Pro models (tentative name). As per a report by Korean website The Elec, Apple will use the new technology from Samsung to hide Face ID under the display. The report suggests that Apple iPhone 15 Pro models may only have a single punch hole camera at the front as the Face ID will be hidden under the display.
According to the report, the under panel camera technology makes the lens hole invisible when the camera function is not in use. Samsung used similar technology in its latest foldable smartphone Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 that was launched last year.
As per the report If Samsung develops the technology as planned, it will be first applied to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (tentative name) which is also rumoured to launch next year. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is said to use similar technology as the current-gen foldable smartphone.
Previously similar design was also predicted for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro models. However display industry consultant Ross Young suggested that the smartphones will feature a punch-hole cutout to house the front camera and the pill-shaped cutout will feature an infrared camera for Face ID. In a follow-up tweet, Young also suggested that we may not be able to see an under display infrared camera until 2023 or 2024.
The report also suggests that Apple may have rejected under panel camera technology that uses laser drilling method. The existing under panel cameras are made using this method only.
