While state party vice presidents Dayashankar Singh and AK Sharma, general secretary JPS Rathod, and state OBC morcha president Narendra Kashyap have also become ministers, UP BJP general secretary, organisation, Sunil Bansal has expressed his willingness to be relieved from his current role, party insiders told ET.
Bansal is considered close to the national leadership and there is a plan to bring him to Delhi at the level of joint general secretary with responsibility of 2-3 key states, they said. Bansal became the general secretary in 2017 and played a part in BJP’s success in two consecutive assembly elections. He had an eye on the ground and right from candidate selection to ministerial birth, his opinion mattered for the party, sources said.
Meanwhile, discussions on appointing a new state BJP chief are taking place at various levels within the party. BJP is planning to bet on a Brahmin leader and there are a few names under consideration, partymen cited earlier said.
Mathura MLA Srikant Sharma, Basti MP Harish Dwivedi, and Kannauj MP Subrat Pathak are some of the names doing the rounds, they said. Bhogaon MLA Ram Naresh Agnihotri is also in the race, but some party leaders expressed reservation over his age.
As per sources, BJP is identifying the leaders who could work on the ground and prepare a strong base for the party before the 2024 general elections. Some of the young MLAs who have won for the first time will be given major responsibility in the organisation, they said.
