KMC Polls: Trinamool fields 45% women candidates
The party has fielded 64 women (45%) and 80 men candidates. The outgoing mayorm, Firhad Hakim, and his deputy Atin Ghosh will be fighting the KMC polls.
“The Mayor candidate is yet to be decided and it will be announced after the polls. After a high-level meeting in the presence of AITC chairperson Mamata Banerjee and other senior leaders, the list of 144 candidates has been decided today. Six MLAs are there in the KMC list,” AITC secretary general Partha Chatterjee told mediapersons.
There are 19 SC candidates, 23 minority candidates, out of which 2 are Christian candidates.
“We have always given 33% reservation for women. This time they make up 45% of candidates. 39 sitting councillors have been dropped while 87 have been retained,” veteran AITC leader Sudip Bandopadhyay said.
It is learnt that Trinamool Supremo Mamata Banerjee, poll strategist Prashant Kishor, Trinamool National general secretary Abhisek Banerjee, party secretary general Partha Chatterjee and Subrata Bakshiwere present in the high-level meeting.
The CPM-led Left Front on Friday announced names of candidates for elections to the KMC, leaving out 17 seats, where it intends to back anti-BJP and anti-TMC forces.
Unlike the last assembly elections, it did not enter into any alliance with the Congress or the ISF.
