Washington: Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and Republican candidate, announced the suspension of her White House campaign on Wednesday. While refraining from endorsing former president Donald Trump, Haley urged him to actively seek the support of moderates and independents who had backed her during the primary.
In a televised address from Charleston, South Carolina, Haley stated, “It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him, and I hope he does that.”
Haley, who was competing against Trump for the opportunity to challenge President Joe Biden in the November election, managed to win only one state on “Super Tuesday” and never posed a significant obstacle to Trump’s nomination.
The 52-year-old gained national recognition when Trump appointed her as the ambassador to the United Nations in 2017. Utilizing the high-profile UN position, she cultivated an image as a plain-speaking conservative. Haley positioned herself as the last contender standing between the perceived “chaos” of Trump and the 2024 Republican White House nomination.
Expressing gratitude for the widespread support received throughout the country, Haley acknowledged, “But the time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard — I have done that. I have no regrets
