NEW DELHI: Sukhjinder Randhawa has been named as the next chief minister of Punjab.
“All MLAs have named Sukhjinder Randhawa chief minister before Congress high command,” Congress MLA Pritam Kotbhai told reporters in Chandigarh.
Randhawa was the minister of jail and department of cooperation in Amarinder-led Punjab government. In 2017, he was re-elected MLA from Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency. Considered a loyal lieutenant of Amarinder at that time, he was inducted into the cabinet.
As time passed, Randhawa developed serious differences with Captain Amarinder Singh and has been vocal against him in the recent ‘revolt’ led by Punjab Congress committee chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Recently, despite being a cabinet minister, he went to media with the demand of making Batala a new district.
The announcement comes a day after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as chief minister alleging humiliation by the Congress leadership.
Amarinder stepped down with a one-line resignation letter to pre-empt what was widely being seen as a move to remove him from the chief ministership through an emergency Congress Legislature Party meeting convened by the AICC at 5pm. He met the governor less than half an hour before the meeting.
