NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a sharp dig at Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav during the inauguration of the Saryu Canal National Project in Uttar Pradesh, saying that he is waiting for someone to “claim credit” for the project.
The Prime Minister’s jibe came in response to Akhilesh’s earlier statement that three-fourth of the project work was completed when SP was in power in UP.
“When I started from Delhi, I was waiting for someone to say that he had cut the ribbon of this project and started this scheme. This is the habit of some people, maybe in their childhood they had cut its ribbon,” he said, without taking any names.
The Prime Minister said that while cutting ribbons is the priority of some people, the BJP government believes in completing the schemes on time.
“In 2014 when I came to power, I was amazed to see that 99 irrigation projects were lying (incomplete) for decades in the country,” he said.
Speaking about the unnecessary delay in the Saryu Canal National Project, the Prime Minister said, “Most painful is the waste and misuse of the country’s money, time and resources and its humiliation. This thinking is the biggest hurdle in the balanced development of the country and this thinking has also stalled the Saryu Nahar project.”
According to the Centre, the project was launched in 1978 but got delayed for four decades due to “lack of continuity of budgetary support, interdepartmental coordination and adequate monitoring”.
Earlier, Akhilesh, who has often claimed that the work done under his government in Uttar Pradesh is being projected as the achievements of the BJP government, attacked the Yogi Adityanath government for taking credit for the Saryu Canal project.
“The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh took five years to complete the remaining works of Saryu Nahar National Project which was three-fourths completed during the SP government,” Akhilesh tweeted in Hindi, hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Balrampur here to inaugurate the project.
“There are basically two types of people in the world, some who really work and some who appropriate others’ work. This is the difference between the government of SP and today’s ‘Kainchijivi’ (ribbon cutting) government. That’s why in 2022 elections the BJP is going to be completely wiped out,” Akhilesh said in another tweet.
He said 2022 will usher in a new era for of the SP and the state will prosper with “canals of development”.
