PANAJI: Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram on Sunday criticized the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) party’s promise to provide Rs 5000 as monthly universal income support to 3.5 lakh households, saying. Chidambaram said that the scheme, which would be routed through women who are the head of a household, would put a huge burden on Goa’s finances.
However, the TMC shot back and questioned why Congress was getting riled up with the Griha Laxmi scheme, which aims to infuse liquidity into the economic system. TMC said that Goa’s annual budgetary allocation for the Griha Laxmi scheme would be just 6-8% of the state’s total budget and with “good and sensible governance” the scheme could be successfully implemented.
Chidambaram taunted the TMC, saying that their math “deserves the Nobel Prize for Economics”.
“A monthly grant of Rs 5000 to a woman in 3.5 lakh households in Goa will cost Rs 175 crore a month. That is Rs 2100 crore a year. It is a “small” sum for the state of Goa that had an outstanding debt of Rs 23,473 crore at the end of March 2020,” said Chidambaram.
“God bless Goa! Or should it be God save Goa?” he said.
Lok Sabha MP and AITC Goa in-charge Mahua Moitra was quick to reply to Chidambaram. “Yes sir Chidambaram, Rs 5000 to 3.5 lakh Goan households is Rs 2100 crores, which is 6-8% of total budget which is perfectly doable,” said Moitra.
The TMC MP said, “good economics in a depressed post-Covid scenario requires putting cash in hand and liquidity into system.”
Meanwhile, TMC functionary Kiran Kandolkar slammed the Congress saying that the Rs 35,000 Cr revenue loss through illegal mining has yet to be recovered. Referring to the former chief minister and Congress MLA Digambar Kamat, Kandolkar said that Congress should put people’s interests first.
“Rs 2,000 Cr per year for all Goan families hurts the Congress. Moral science comes before Math,” said Kandolkar.
Interestingly, it was the Congress party, which first floated the idea of a minimum income guarantee programme called Nyay- Nyuntam Ayay Yojana for the 2019 parliamentary polls. The Congress party had assured that it would provide income support of Rs 72,000 to five crore families who are the poorest in the country.
