GUWAHATI: The northeast is set to usher in the new year amid teeth-chattering cold with temperatures dipping to single digits in five of the state capitals of the region on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Kohima recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius, followed by 6.2 and 6.3 degrees Celsius in Imphal and Shillong respectively. While the minimum temperature was 7 degrees Celsius in Itanagar, the corresponding figure in Aizawl was 7.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. In several towns in Assam like Dibrugarh, Jorhat and North Lakhimpur, the minimum temperature was 10 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
“By and large the temperature is normal in the northeast. But day temperature has been on the lower side due to cloudy weather, which is a result of a cyclonic circulation that lies over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar and extends up to 2.1 km above the mean sea level. Strong Southwesterly winds prevail over the region in the higher levels of the atmosphere,” Sunit Das, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD, told TOI. .
An IMD release on Wednesday said that due to the cloudy condition, the day temperature on Wednesday has been less in comparison to Tuesday’s maximum temperatures in most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. However, Wednesday’s minimum temperatures are seen to be more than the minimum temperatures recorded on Tuesday, it added.
The release said that cloudy conditions are likely to prevail over the region till Thursday and the sky may clear after that. However, dense fog is likely to occur in isolated pockets of the region from December 31.
The weather bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Wednesday evening predicted light to moderate snowfall in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh in isolated places in the next 48 hours. “Moderate rain is very likely to occur at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, at many places over Assam and Meghalaya. Light rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura,” it added.
