NEW DELHI: India might not have taken a final call on committing its timeline for ‘net zero’ carbon emission goal, but an official statement issued on Friday, quoting junior minister in the PMO Jitendra Singh, created a flutter as it spoke about achieving the target by 2050. The statement was, however, later revised by removing the timeline.
The revised statement, quoting Singh’s speech at the International Climate Summit, merely said India was “well poised to take a leadership role towards carbon neutrality”.
The initial statement appeared unrealistic as even the biggest current emitter China has committed to reach ‘net zero’ goal only by 2060.
Though discussions were going on, there had never been any reference to the 2050 timeline, sources said.
