In his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed former prime minister Indira Gandhi and Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru for curtailing freedom of expression during their tenure. PM Modi said that Majrooh Sultanpuri and Prof Dharampal were jailed for criticising Nehru, and Kishore Kumar was banned from singing on the radio during the Emergency. He added, ‘ We know how freedom of expression is curbed when people don’t agree with one family’.
