The Congress on Sunday demanded the Centre to sack Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and immediately constitute a time-bound probe by a special investigation team under the supervision of a sitting Supreme Court judge into an alleged land scam involving his family.

The AICC and Assam Congress leaders alleged that a company linked to Sarma’s wife and relatives “has illegally grabbed the government land” meant for poor people and for institutions.

AICC in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, MPs Ripun Bora, Gaurav Gogoi and Abdul Khaleque from the state and party spokesman Gaurav Vallabh raised the demand at a press conference at the Congress headquarters. In a statement they said: “…Sarma…is handing over the government land worth crores to his family members on his own whims and fancies…”
