Sharma had undergone a liver transplant operation on February 13 at Gurgaon’s Artemis Hospital where she passed away this morning at 10.30, official sources said in Dehradun.
She was put on ventilator support on Tuesday after she developed some complications and finally succumbed this morning, chief minister Harish Rawat’s media incharge Surendra Kumar said.
Sharma is survived by her husband and three sons, he added.
Her body is being brought here this evening for cremation and a three-day state mourning has been declared following her death.
Sharma, a former mayor of Dehradun, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in November last year as a Congress member thus becoming the first woman member of the Upper House from the hill state, Kumar said.
Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Governor K K Paul have expressed grief at the untimely demise of the Congress leader, who was known for raising women specific issues.
In his condolence message, the Governor described her as an efficient and popular leader whose death was an irreparable loss to her party.
