NEW DELHI: BJP MLA from Kaliaganj, Soumen Roy joined Trinamool Congress in presence of party leader Partha Chatterjee in Kolkata.
“I had to contest from Kaliaganj on the BJP ticket due to some circumstances. But my soul and heart belong to TMC. I joined the party again to support CM Mamata Banerjee’s efforts,” Roy said after joining TMC.
“I am apologetic to party for the time I was not here,” he added.
Soumen Roy is the fourth MLA from BJP to return to TMC after elections.
Earlier this week, BJP MLA Biswajit Das and BJP councillor Manotosh Nath quit party in Kolkata to join Trinamool Congress.
Biswajit who had quit TMC to join BJP in 2019, said, “due to some misunderstandings, some changes were made that shouldn’t have been made. I’ve returned to my home now and I will continue to work for people of my state and constituency.” “I never felt very comfortable in the BJP. I wanted to return to the TMC long ago. The BJP has done nothing for Bengal,” he added.
Earlier, in June, BJP MLA and party’s national vice-president Mukul Roy rejoined the TMC, four years after he left the Mamata Banerjee-led party to join BJP. Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won 213 seats in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party garnered 77 seats in the 294-seat state assembly.
