Guwahati: Assam’s activist politician Akhil Gogoi has threatened to hit the streets with supporters, once again, to oppose implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Gogoi’s response came to home minister Amit Shah’s promise in West Bengal on Thursday that the Centre would implement CAA as soon as Covid-19 ends.

Gogoi was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for leading protests against CAA in December 2019. He was accused of having ‘links with Maoists’. However, he won the Sivsagar seat in last year’s assembly polls, contesting from jail.

“It is a draconian act and has no space in Assam for CAA. If there is an attempt to implement it, we will again protest against it and hit the streets,” Gogoi said in Guwahati on Friday.

All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) has also threatened to resume the stir if CAA is implemented.
